The age-old maxim that one should never discuss religion, money or politics with family or in business seems outdated these days, as everyone is offering their armchair political analysis on the issues of the day. But as real estate professionals, is it wise for us to keep an eye on the happenings in Washington and our statehouses? As someone who has been involved in government for more than 20 years in an appointed, elected and professional capacity, I can tell you that the answer is emphatically, yes!

Real estate has been, and remains, the foundation of wealth-building for so many Americans. It’s also an integral component in our nation’s economic ecosystem. The National Association of REALTORS® estimates that every home sale generates two jobs. Using that ratio, 1,000 home sales generate 2,000 jobs. Not to mention, the flow of goods, services, and income for millions of Americans that is directly contributable to our nation’s gross domestic production (GDP).

Issues linked to the debate around raising the national debt ceiling, housing production, tax policy, climate regulations, market conditions, and evolving security threats all have an impact on our industry. This is why Anywhere continues to invest in building a strong Government Affairs function led by Becky Tallent. 1. Get active with trade associations such as your local chapter of the National Association of Realtors or Land Title Association. In addition to networking opportunities, resources, and continuing education benefits, active involvement in these organizations helps agents ensure their interests are represented and protected.
2. Attend your local community government meetings. Engaging with your local government allows you to hear first-hand what's happening in your community and how local decisions, policies, and developments can shape your own economic future and that of your clients.
