A woman wrapping a gift

As every real estate professional knows, happy clients are your best source of referrals. So, when it comes to choosing a closing gift, it’s wise to choose something memorable – something your clients will use and appreciate – so that they think of you whenever they use it.

As you have worked with your clients over the past weeks or months, you may already know them well enough to know a few things about them: they enjoy a good wine; they are learning to cook; or they are thrilled with their lovely new home.

You can give your wine drinkers an expensive vintage, but when it’s gone, there is little left to remember. A personalized set of crystal wine glasses may be a better option.

For clients who are learning to cook, consider a personalized cutting board. And for those who adore their new abode, find an artist online who will turn a photo of their new house into a lovely, framed watercolor.

If you’ve done your homework on your clients’ tastes, peruse sites like Etsy for a wealth of ideas for customized goods. From monogrammed dinner napkins to custom bird feeders to personalized door mats, you can find something that’s a just-right choice for even the most discriminating.

If your clients are new in town, gift cards to one or two of your favorite restaurants, theaters or cultural venues may be just the ticket – and you can’t go wrong with a gift card to the local big box store. If your region is known for its beaches, mountains, lakes or rivers, a gift card to a local sporting goods store may be an excellent option.

Stop and think before you lay in a supply of candles, calendars or cupcakes – and pay attention as you spend time with your clients. Then choose a thoughtful closing gift you know will fit their tastes and lifestyle. You will reap the reward the very first time they send a new client your way.
